How unsuspecting husband found out...

I returned home that day with freshly printed ultrasound pictures of our babies (Three of the "one" baby only and two with both of the babies in them). Hubby wasn't due home from his "unreachable by cell phone golf tournament" until 8:00 pm that night, so fortunately I had a steady stream of phone calls coming in as the news got out to keep me occupied until then. I left only a little message on his cell phone stating the visit had gone well and I had pictures to show him when he got home.

He arrived home and came upstairs and sat down next to me asking a few questions about the visit. I gave him the first picture of the "one" baby. I pointed out the outline of the sac and the baby and continued to hand him the other two pictures of just one. THEN I handed him the picture of "two." He pointed out excitedly to the top one.

"Is that the baby?" "Yes," I answered smiling and glancing up to see if he had a clue. (Not yet). "What's that?" I asked pointing at the other one. "I don't know, A blob?" He said confused. I giggled. So I retraced the first pictures..."That's the sac and that's the baby...and that's a sac and that's a baby..."

I looked up at him and it was pretty clear he had gotten it. A look of shock overtook his face. "Your kidding?" he stated as I shook my head no. "TWO?" he blurted out. "YEP!" I said.

We sat there on the couch staring at each other several times, breaking out in laughter. I don't think he's over the shock yet...

And then there were two...

The story of how I found out about this craziness...Yesterday was my first Dr.s visit and Hubby (my wonderful husband who is cooking dinner and laying down our wood laminate floor simutaneously) was unable to attend. This was OK with me as I assured him there would be other visits to attend.

We did all the routine stuff and I guess the Nurse Practitioner's scolding of how much weight people gain with pregnancy and asking how tall I was and stating I "look taller than that" a few times should have clued me in a bit. I had gained about "8" pounds by my estimate (3-5 is normal for the first 12 weeks and I was at 8 weeks). And while I have been know to frequent places like Claim Jumpers and eat Chipotle burritos in one sitting, I had to admit the last few weeks had definitely NOT been my stomach's pride and joy thanks to coursing hormones in my body. So off we went to finish up with a standard ultrasound.

The "baby" appeared immediately on the screen and NP began pointing out the head and body and legs. As the picture faded in and out on the screen, I caught a glimpse of the heart beat for the first time and was mesmerized by how precious it was. "Is that the heart beating?" I asked excitedly. She answered yes and pointed out some more things, finished up the measurements and said she was going to check my ovaries. "Sure," I thought. We're in that area, might as well check stuff out... "Oww!" I exclaimed as she poked one of them. Apparently it hurts when you've located it. She moved over to the other side.

As I watched the screen "split in two", NP let out a high pitched "Hmmm" Do I have a weird ovary or something, I thought? She didn't sound very worried. I began to think, I didn't know you could split the screen in two, she must be looking at the baby from a different angle...

"How interesting.." she stated with clear glee in her voice. Then the thought entered my mind... NP began looking at me in silence with a smile on her face and I began looking at her WAITING for her to say something. We sat there in silence for what seemed to be an eternity as she stared at the screen and then me. "Do you see what I see?" she stated excitedly. "Is that TWO?" I blurted out shocked and excitedly overwhelmed. "YEP!"
So I had to ask ONE more time if she was sure, to get it through my unbelieving brain...I lay back on the table giggling like a giddy school girl or should I say pregnant woman with lots of hormones coursing through her body. I don't remember the tears of joy coming out of my eyes but I had to wipe them away as they slid sideways down my face and onto the table. "Wow, this is gonna change everything.. I bet Hubby is going to wish he was here..."

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: So I swore to my self that I would never write a blog (web-log for all you newbies)only about one thing-for example a BABY ONLY blog. (Especially here on Blogger as there are other forums for these things.) But with new recent info in hand,I am going to "break" my rule a bit and write about "two" things and share this wonderful surprise with family and friends. Two little lives that have taken us by surprise. And I'll even break my rule of leaving the writing world since high school to supposedly never return again and (YES mom,) I'm even going to let people read it!
I have been waiting to start this until I could see our two little ones again at the current Dr.'s visit in hopes they are doing well. The second trimester is supposed to be a bit of safety net but anyone who's dealt with twins quickly learns that there is no magic safety number with them. It is definitely a different experience. So have fun joining us and keep us in your prayers...
